GEO Readiness
Checklist.

Fifteen concrete checks to see whether AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews — can actually read, trust and cite your Shopify store. Work through it on your own store; no sign-up required.

If an AI engine can't parse your product content or verify your facts, it won't recommend you — it will quote a competitor instead. This checklist covers the 15 things that most determine whether your store is "AI-readable". Aim to be able to tick every one. The items marked as structured data matter most, because they let a machine understand your store without guessing.

Answer-first product descriptions

Each description opens with a clear, factual sentence that answers "what is this and who is it for?" before any marketing flourish.

Why: AI engines lift the first clear, self-contained answer they find — bury it and you won't be quoted.

FAQ content published as FAQPage schema

Common product and store questions are marked up as FAQPage JSON-LD, not just plain text.

Why: Structured Q&A is the format AI answer engines parse most reliably.

An llms.txt file served for your store

You publish a /llms.txt that summarises your store and links your key pages.

Why: It gives AI crawlers a clean map — helpful, though on its own it won't get you cited without citable content.

Product structured data (Product JSON-LD)

Products expose name, price, availability and description as Product schema.

Why: Lets engines state price and stock confidently instead of skipping your product.

Unique meta titles and descriptions

Every important page has its own title (under ~60 chars) and description (under ~155), not a template duplicate.

Why: Duplicate metadata makes it hard for engines to tell your pages apart or summarise them.

Image alt text coverage

Product and content images have descriptive alt text, not blank or filename alt.

Why: Alt text is the only way non-visual systems understand your images — and it aids accessibility.

Descriptive, question-shaped headings

Section headings read like real questions or clear topics ("How big is it?"), not vague labels ("Details").

Why: Question-shaped headings match how people prompt AI, making your content a closer answer.

Organization and WebSite schema on the homepage

Your homepage identifies the business (Organization) and the site (WebSite) as structured data.

Why: Establishes who you are so engines can attribute and trust citations to your brand.

AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt

Your robots.txt does not block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended.

Why: If you block the crawlers, you opt out of being read and cited entirely.

Specific, factual product details

Descriptions include concrete specs — dimensions, materials, compatibility, use cases — not just adjectives.

Why: Engines cite verifiable facts; "premium and luxurious" gives them nothing to quote.

Internal links between related products, collections and posts

Related items and supporting blog content link to each other in context.

Why: Internal links help engines understand topical relationships and find all your relevant pages.

Accurate, up-to-date content

Prices, availability and claims are current; discontinued items and stale info are cleaned up.

Why: Engines de-prioritise sources that contradict reality; accuracy builds citation trust.

Correct canonical URLs

Each page declares a canonical URL so duplicates (filters, variants) don't compete.

Why: Prevents your ranking and citation signals from being split across duplicate URLs.

A current sitemap.xml

Your sitemap lists live pages and is submitted in Google Search Console.

Why: Ensures crawlers discover every product and post, including new ones, quickly.

Breadcrumb structured data

Pages expose BreadcrumbList schema reflecting your store's hierarchy.

Why: Breadcrumbs give engines context for where a page sits and how it relates to categories.
