What llms.txt is actually worth, stated first. Ahrefs studied 137,000 domains in 2026 and found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests; of the requests that did arrive, AI retrieval bots were 1.1%. Google stated in July 2025 that it does not support llms.txt and has no plans to. OpenAI does not mention it in its crawler documentation. Anthropic publishes one but has never said Claude parses third-party files. Perplexity is the one search product confirmed to consume it, and coding agents read them routinely. So: keep one, because it is free and something does read it — but nobody should sell you an llms.txt as a route into ChatGPT or Google, and we will not.
Getting llms.txt onto a Shopify store.
Shopify doesn't let you upload files to your domain root, so yourstore.com/llms.txt can't be created directly. Three real workarounds, best first:
1 — Cloudflare (cleanest, if your DNS is there)
Serve the file at the edge: Cloudflare dashboard → Rules → create a rule for yourstore.com/llms.txt returning your file's content (a Worker or Snippet), or a redirect rule to a hosted copy. The file answers at the true root URL with a 200 — exactly what fetchers want.
2 — Shopify Files + URL redirect (no external services)
- Shopify admin → Settings → Files → upload your
llms.txt(Shopify hosts it on its CDN and gives you a URL). - Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects → create
/llms.txt→ the CDN URL. - Verify: open
yourstore.com/llms.txt— it should land on your file. Most AI fetchers follow the redirect.
3 — Let an app maintain it
Some SEO apps publish and update llms.txt as your catalogue changes — including Navaal: AI SEO & GEO, which also keeps the content the file points at answer-first and citable. Set-and-forget beats a file that goes stale.

What is llms.txt?
A plain-text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt giving AI systems a curated, readable map of your site: what you sell, your most important pages, and a quotable one-liner for each. robots.txt says what crawlers may fetch; llms.txt says what's worth understanding and citing.
Does it actually help my store get recommended by AI?
Not on its own, as far as anyone has measured — Ahrefs' 2025 study found sites with an llms.txt got no more AI-bot traffic than sites without one. It costs nothing and does no harm, so keep it; the levers the citation studies do find are letting AI crawlers in via robots.txt, answering the question in the first few hundred words, and statistics with a source next to them. llms.txt is the map on top, not a substitute.
What should an e-commerce llms.txt contain?
Store name, one honest paragraph on what you sell and for whom, then 10–30 curated URLs — top collections, bestsellers, shipping/returns, about — each with a one-line description an AI could quote verbatim. Curation is the value: a human-picked shortlist, not a sitemap dump.
